Procedures & Qualifications as a Texas Notary Public

Instructions to help guide you through the entire process!

First Step
Completing your application for appointment:

  • NAME TO BE USED AS A NOTARY PUBLIC:The name to be used as a Notary Public, you should enter the name exactly as you intend to sign documents when acting as a Notary Public. Your commission will be issued in the name you choose. The name can be the full legal name or any variation thereof. For instance, if your full legal name is Gloria Ann Smith, you may choose to qualify as a Notary Public under the name Gloria A. Smith. There is not a statutory requirement that you use your full legal name. However, when signing as a Notary Public, you may use only the name under which you qualified. Some examples of a commonly used Suffix are: Sr., Jr., and III.
  • Notary Public Surety Bond section: Leave this section blank.
  • Execution Section: Date and sign as the applicant. You must sign in the name you use when acting as a Notary Public. For instance, if you print the name Gloria A. Smith, you must sign Gloria A. Smith for Signature of Applicant.

Second Step
From the home page, go to NOTARY PACKAGES section and choose one of the packages available. You may choose one of the discounted supply packages, or you may purchase the bond and state filing fee, and individual items separately.
Requirements: The Office of the Secretary of State requires that you purchase a $10,000 surety bond, pay the $21.00 State filing fee, keep a notary record book, and have a stamp/seal with your name and current commission expiration date.

Third Step
Once you have chosen your package or individual supplies you will need to complete the supply order form. Print the order form, the Application for Appointment, Errors and Omissions application (if applicable) and return back to our office with your payment to:

Please take the time to review the information listed on the application attached. If you are not interested in this coverage please initial the top right hand corner of the application and indicate that you are DECLINING this coverage, and return back to our office.
